Aluminium, steel and composite sliding gates compared

Hot-dip galvanised steel (with steel bars or composite/hardwood infill) is the strongest value choice at €2,200 to €3,500 manual or €3,000 to €5,000 electric. Welded marine-grade powder-coated aluminium (€3,200 to €4,200 manual, €4,200 to €7,500+ electric) weighs half as much on the motor and rollers and can never rust, even on coastal driveways.

Why composite infill has largely replaced softwood on steel frames

On a traditional timber-infill sliding gate, red deal or cedar tongue-and-groove boards absorb rainwater in winter — adding up to 35% to the gate's weight on the motor — and shrink in summer sun, opening gaps and warping the frame if not oiled regularly.

Wood-polymer composite (WPC) or aluminium-core boards slot neatly into a 50mm × 50mm or 60mm × 40mm hot-dip galvanised, powder-coated steel box frame. They give full privacy, absorb zero moisture, never change weight between January and July, and clean down with a garden hose.

Three reasons lightweight aluminium excels on sliding gates

  • Half the rolling mass. A 4-metre solid-privacy aluminium sliding gate typically weighs 110–140 kg, compared with 280–350 kg for a steel-and-composite gate. Less inertia means quieter rolling, less wear on track bearings or cantilever carriages, and lower-stress safety stopping distances.
  • No rust bleed on light renders or granite piers. Even galvanised steel can weep rust if drilled on site without cold-galv treatment. Marine-grade 6063-T6 aluminium with a Qualicoat Seaside powder coat cannot rust.
  • Louvred slats for windy sites. Aluminium horizontal louvre profiles give full visual privacy from the road while letting storm gusts bleed through the angled blades.

Questions homeowners ask

How long does a hot-dip galvanised steel sliding gate last in Ireland?

When the fully welded steel frame is submerged in molten zinc at 450°C (hot-dip galvanising to EN ISO 1461) before etching and powder-coating, the zinc layer protects the steel both inside and outside the hollow box section for 25 to 40+ years.

Can aluminium sliding gates look like real wood?

Yes. Sublimation woodgrain powder-coating bakes a textured golden oak, walnut or driftwood grain directly into the marine-grade polyester coating on the aluminium slats, giving the warmth of timber with zero oiling.
