How much does an electric sliding gate cost in Ireland?

An electric tracked steel sliding gate in Ireland typically costs €3,000 to €5,000 supplied and fitted (including the gate leaf, ground track, rack motor, safety edges, photocells and remotes). An electric powder-coated aluminium sliding gate costs €4,200 to €7,500+, and a trackless cantilever sliding gate costs €3,800 to €6,800 in steel or €4,800 to €8,500 in aluminium. If a new concrete ground-track beam is needed, allow €500 to €2,000.

How much space do I need to the side of my entrance for a sliding gate?

For a standard tracked sliding gate on a V-groove ground rail, you need straight, unobstructed run-back space behind one pier equal to the clear opening width plus 450mm to 600mm for the tail and motor mount (for example, a 3.6m entrance needs 4.1m to 4.2m of side run-back). For a trackless cantilever gate, allow 1.35× the opening width (about 4.9m for a 3.6m entrance).

When is a sliding gate better than swing gates?

A sliding gate is the right choice whenever your driveway rises uphill behind the piers (where inward-opening swing gates would ground out on the tarmac), where the driveway is short and cars park right behind the gate, or on exposed rural and coastal sites where strong winds can catch wide solid swing leaves and strain the motor arms.

Do I need planning permission for a sliding driveway gate in Ireland?

Under Class 5 of Schedule 2, Part 1 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001 (S.I. No. 600 of 2001), capping or replacing a gate at an existing entrance is exempt from planning permission provided the gate and piers do not exceed 2 metres in height and do not create a traffic sightline hazard. Widening an entrance onto a public road or creating a new entrance requires planning permission.

What safety devices are legally required on an electric sliding gate?

Under the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) guidelines on powered gates and European standard EN 12453, an automated sliding gate must never rely on motor force detection alone. It requires pressure-sensitive resistive or optical safety edges on both the leading closing edge and the rear guide-post drawing-in zone, supported by dual inner and outer infrared photocells and a manual release key.

Can a sliding gate work on a gravel driveway?

Loose gravel kicked onto a ground V-rail can jam standard track wheels. For a gravel or tar-and-chip driveway, either cast a 300mm wide flush concrete kerbed apron across the entrance to keep stones off the rail, or install a trackless cantilever sliding gate (€3,800 to €6,800) that travels suspended 70mm–90mm clear above the gravel.

What happens to an electric sliding gate during an ESB power cut?

Every rack-and-pinion sliding gate motor includes two mechanical override keys that unlock the motor clutch in 10 seconds so the gate rolls open smoothly by hand. You can also specify an internal 24V backup battery pack that keeps the gate running for 10 to 20 cycles during a power cut.

Can a tracked sliding gate work if my entrance slopes left-to-right across the piers?

A tracked sliding gate requires the ground rail across the entrance and along the back-run wall to be laid reasonably level. If your driveway slopes uphill into the garden, a sliding gate works brilliantly where swing gates would ground out; if the road threshold itself has a steep cross-slope, a cantilever system or stepped foundation beam is used.

How do you stop pebbles or leaves blocking the floor track?

The round-bar floor rail sits slightly proud of the concrete beam so rainwater and dust wash past it, and the gate's leading shoe sweeps small stones clear as it travels.

How loud is an automated sliding driveway gate?

Modern 24V motors paired with nylon-coated steel toothed rack and sealed bearings operate very quietly — with soft-stop deceleration that slows the leaf gently before it touches the catch post.

Can my sliding gate open partway just for someone walking in?

Yes — every remote fob and keypad has a pedestrian mode button that slides the gate open 1 metre for foot or bike access and closes it automatically after a set pause.

Do you supply the concrete ground beam and electrical ducting?

Yes — your local fabricator-installer can either pour the reinforced concrete track beam and lay the power/intercom ducts as a complete turnkey package, or give your builder/groundworker a dimensioned drawing to pour in advance.
