Sliding gates vs swing gates for Irish driveways
While manual or electric swing gates (€1,500 to €3,500) cost slightly less on a flat driveway with plenty of room inside, a sliding gate (€3,000 to €5,000 electric steel) solves the three classic Irish driveway headaches: driveways that slope uphill from the road, short front gardens where cars park close to the piers, and coastal or rural crosswinds.

Gate & automation: €3,000–€5,000 · Groundworks/beam: +€500–€1,600
Guide price for an electric tracked hot-dip galvanised steel sliding gate, with remote fobs, dual photocells and safety edges included. Allow clear side run-back space along the boundary wall of at least the opening width plus 450mm–600mm behind the pier. All automated sliding gates in Ireland must include EN 12453 force limitation, resistive safety edges on leading and rear trapping points, and inner/outer photocells.

| Driveway factor | Sliding Gate (Single Leaf) | Double Swing Gates (Two Leaves) |
|---|---|---|
| Rising driveway (slopes uphill from road) | Works on any uphill slope (slides parallel to wall) | Inward-swinging leaves scrape the rising tarmac unless hung on costly rising hinges |
| Driveway space eaten inside piers | Zero arc space — slides 150mm–200mm behind the pier wall | Sweeps 1.8m to 2.5m deep into the driveway, blocking parked cars |
| Space needed beside the pier | Needs opening width + 0.5m (tracked) or 1.35× width (cantilever) to one side | Zero side run-back needed — ideal when walls turn 90° right behind the piers |
| Resistance to strong wind (solid boarding) | Extremely stable — wind pushes the gate against steel guide rollers | Solid boarded leaves act like sails, straining ram motors and magnetic locks |
| Resistance to forced entry | Locked between steel catch post, guide rollers and irreversible rack gear | Centre meeting point of two swing leaves needs an electric drop-bolt for high security |
| Typical electric fitted cost (steel) | €3,000 to €5,000 | €2,500 to €3,500 (ram motors) |
Three situations where a sliding gate is the only sensible option
- 1. Your driveway rises uphill from the road entrance. Under the Roads Act, domestic gates must never swing outward over a public footpath or road. If your driveway climbs even a 1-in-12 gradient inside the piers, standard inward-opening swing gates hit the rising ground a metre into their arc. A sliding gate travels sideways across the mouth of the entrance and ignores the uphill driveway slope completely.
- 2. Short town or suburban driveways. In Dublin, Cork, Galway and commuter estates where the front driveway is only 5.5m to 7.0m deep from pier to house wall, a pair of 1.8m swing leaves needs 2 metres of clear swing arc — meaning you cannot close the gates once one or two cars are parked inside. A sliding gate tucks flat behind the front wall, letting you park bumper-to-pier.
- 3. Wide entrances (4.0m to 6.0m+) with solid privacy infill. Solid composite or tongue-and-groove boarded gates catch enormous wind loads in Atlantic coastal and open rural counties. On a sliding gate, wind pressure is absorbed sideways into the masonry pier and ground rollers rather than levering against a motor arm.
When you cannot fit a sliding gate: side run-back obstructions
A single-piece sliding gate must have a straight run-back corridor along the inside of your front boundary wall on either the left or the right pier. If both piers sit tight against a 90-degree side boundary wall, a pedestrian pillar, a steep bank or an oil tank with less than the opening width available, choose either double swing gates, bi-folding speed gates or a twin-leaf telescopic sliding gate.

Questions homeowners ask
Are sliding gates faster to open than swing gates?
Standard domestic sliding gate motors move at 10 to 12 metres per minute (taking about 16 to 20 seconds for a 3.5m opening), roughly the same as swing gates. High-speed brushless 24V sliding motors can open a 3.6m driveway in 9 to 12 seconds.
What if my entrance slopes sideways from left pier to right pier?
A tracked sliding gate can run along a gentle sideways cross-fall (up to about 1 in 20) provided the motor has an encoder and heavy-duty braking, though installers prefer to step the concrete ground beam level where possible so a manual gate cannot roll on its own.
