Sliding driveway gate cost in Ireland

In Ireland, a manual steel or timber-infill sliding gate costs €2,200 to €3,500 fitted, while a fully automated tracked steel sliding gate costs €3,000 to €5,000. Powder-coated aluminium sliding gates run from €3,200 to €4,200 (manual) to €4,200–€7,500+ (electric), and trackless cantilever gates cost €3,800 to €6,800 in steel or €4,800 to €8,500 in aluminium.

Does a sliding gate cost more than a pair of swing gates?

On the gate hardware and motor side, an electric sliding gate actually uses one heavy-duty geared motor instead of two swing rams or two underground jackboxes. Where a sliding gate adds cost is in the groundworks and steel length:

  • A tracked sliding gate needs a dead-level concrete strip (€500 to €2,000) poured across the full width of the entrance AND along the inside of the boundary wall where the gate slides back.
  • The gate frame itself is 400mm to 600mm wider than the clear opening (or 35% wider on a cantilever gate) so the tail stays engaged in the guide rollers when fully closed.
  • By contrast, compared with underground-motor swing gates (which need two deep drained foundation boxes and cost €4,000 to €7,000+), an electric sliding gate is often the same price or lower while standing up far better to wind and rising ground.

Electricity consumption and annual servicing

A domestic 24V DC sliding gate motor draws around 3 to 5 watts on standby and 120 to 250 watts for the 15 to 20 seconds the gate is moving — working out at roughly €15 to €25 of electricity per year. An annual service check (€100 to €250) cleans the track, checks the toothed rack mesh, tests the resistive safety edges with a force gauge and lubricates the guide rollers.

Questions homeowners ask

Is it cheaper to install a tracked sliding gate or a cantilever gate?

A tracked sliding gate on a V-groove ground rail (€3,000 to €5,000 in steel) is typically €800 to €1,800 cheaper than a trackless cantilever gate (€3,800 to €6,800) because the gate does not need the extra 35% counterbalance tail or heavy enclosed monorail channel.

Can I install a manual sliding gate now and add a motor later?

Yes. Ask your fabricator to weld or tap the mounting tabs for the toothed rack onto the bottom rail when making the manual gate (€2,200 to €3,500) and lay an empty 50mm electrical duct to the motor pier. Adding a motor, rack and safety kit later costs €1,200 to €3,500+.

What VAT rate applies to sliding gate installation in Ireland?

Under Revenue's two-thirds rule for building fixtures fitted to residential property, if the cost of materials is less than two-thirds of the total supply-and-fit price, the reduced 13.5% VAT rate applies to the whole installation; if the gate materials exceed two-thirds of the bill, 23% VAT applies.
