Sliding gate motors and EN 12453 safety in Ireland
A sliding gate motor sits bolted to a concrete plinth just inside one pier and drives a steel or nylon-coated toothed rack fixed along the bottom of the gate leaf. Under HSA guidance and EN 12453, every automated sliding gate in Ireland must pair encoder obstacle detection with pressure-sensitive safety edges and dual photocell beams.

Guide price for retrofitting a 24V/230V sliding gate motor, toothed rack and EN 12453 safety edges to your existing sliding gate, with keypad and GSM mobile opener (+€400–€900). Allow clear side run-back space along the boundary wall of at least the opening width plus 450mm–600mm behind the pier. All automated sliding gates in Ireland must include EN 12453 force limitation, resistive safety edges on leading and rear trapping points, and inner/outer photocells.

| Motor specification | 24V DC Brushless / Low-Voltage Motor | 230V AC Heavy-Duty Motor |
|---|---|---|
| Gate weight ratings | 400 kg, 600 kg, 800 kg up to 1,200 kg | 600 kg, 1,000 kg, 1,500 kg up to 2,500+ kg |
| Duty cycle (daily openings) | Intensive / continuous use (runs cool for multi-car homes & apartments) | Domestic & heavy commercial (thermal cut-out if cycled non-stop) |
| Soft start & slow-down | Built-in magnetic/optical encoder slows gate smoothly before each stop | Available on inverter/encoder models |
| Battery back-up in power cuts | Yes — plug-in 24V battery pack keeps gate working during ESB outages | No internal battery — open using the manual release key |
| Obstacle force sensitivity | Millisecond amperometric current sensing + encoder reversal | Relies on electronic clutch + external resistive safety edges |
HSA powered gate safety: guarding both ends of a sliding gate
Because a sliding gate travels linearly across an opening and slides back alongside a wall or railing, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and European standard I.S. EN 12453 identify two distinct crush and shear zones that must be protected:
- 1. The closing leading edge (gate nose to catch pier). Protected by a full-height 8k2 resistive or optical rubber safety edge strip mounted vertically on the nose of the gate (or catch post) plus a pair of infrared photocells across the entrance. Touching the rubber strip stops and reverses the gate immediately.
- 2. The opening run-back zone (rear of gate & guide rollers). As a sliding gate opens, it moves back behind the pier. If a child stands near the guide post or puts an arm through an open-railed fence while the gate slides past, a severe drawing-in or shearing hazard exists. Installers fit a rear resistive safety edge on the guide post, a second set of internal photocells, and mesh or solid infills if gaps exceed 100mm.
- 3. Manual release key. Every sliding gate motor has a key-locked lever on the front of the housing that disengages the drive cog from the rack so you can slide the gate open by hand in seconds.
Nylon-coated vs galvanised steel toothed drive rack
The motor's pinion gear meshes with a 1-metre modular toothed rack bolted along the bottom rail of the gate. For domestic gates up to 500 kg, steel-cored nylon rack is the top choice: it has a solid steel bar inside for strength, requires zero messy grease (which otherwise attracts grit on a ground track) and runs whisper-quiet. For heavy steel or commercial gates over 500–600 kg, 12mm or 30×12mm galvanised steel rack welded or bolted on stand-offs is used.

Questions homeowners ask
How much does it cost to add a motor to an existing manual sliding gate?
Retrofitting a 24V or 230V sliding gate motor, full-length toothed rack, control board, two sets of photocells, wireless/inductive safety edges and remote fobs to an existing sound sliding gate costs €1,200 to €3,500+ installed.
What happens to an electric sliding gate during a power cut?
Either a built-in 24V back-up battery continues operating the gate for 10 to 30 cycles, or you insert your triangle/numbered manual release key into the motor cover, pull the release lever 90 degrees, and push the gate open by hand.
Can I open my sliding gate from my mobile phone?
Yes. A GSM unit or Wi-Fi/4G smart relay (€400 to €1,500) lets authorised family phone numbers dial the gate to open it for free (it rejects the call and triggers the relay), or open and check gate status via a smartphone app from anywhere.
